September marked a significant milestone for Prep I as the children made the transition from the Early Years Department into Key Stage 1. Adapting to the increased expectations and challenges of the Key Stage 1 curriculum, the children have shown remarkable growth, resilience, and a readiness to embrace new learning opportunities.
The term began with the topic ‘All About Me,’ which provided the perfect platform for building connections within the class. The children brought in their ‘All About Me’ bags, filled with objects that held personal significance, and shared their stories with the group. This was not only a wonderful way to get to know each other but also an important exercise in developing speaking and listening skills.
In Science, led by Mr. Grant, the children explored fascinating topics such as where they live in the world and the human body. They particularly enjoyed reading Funny Bones and brought the story to life through creative Art lessons, where they designed their very own ‘Funny Bone’ skeletons.
The second half of the term was equally exciting as the children dived into the topic of The Great Fire of London. They learned about the historical significance of this event and brought it to life by constructing buildings reminiscent of those from 1666. Plans are in place to create their own ‘Great Fire of Bridgewater’ using their handmade structures. With the assistance of the maintenance team, the children will witness a safe and controlled fire – a memorable way to conclude this learning journey. Forest School sessions with Mr. Connolly have been a highlight of the term. The children braved all kinds of weather – cold, wind, rain, and even snow – showing courage and enthusiasm as they learned to tie knots, build dens, and unleash their creativity in the mud kitchen. These outdoor sessions provided hands-on learning experiences that fostered teamwork, problem-solving, and a deeper connection with nature.
Undoubtedly, the pinnacle of the term was the Christmas show, The Angel Express. The children shone brightly, impressing everyone with their singing, dancing, and acting. Their confidence and energy were a testament to how much they have grown in just one term. The festive atmosphere continued as the children enjoyed a well-deserved end-of-term treat, attending the theatre to watch the pantomime Rumpelstiltskin.
We are incredibly proud of the progress the children have made this term, not only in their academic achievements but also in embodying the values of inclusivity, integrity, intellect, and inspiration that define Bridgewater School.
