Exploring the Viking World at Tatton Park

Prep IV went on an amazing Viking adventure at Tatton Park today! We travelled back in time to discover what life was like for the Vikings and had a fantastic day exploring their way of life. When we arrived, we made our way through the farm, where chickens were roaming freely, a Clydesdale horse was happily munching away in her stable and the pigs were busy exploring. We then met some Vikings who introduced us to their village and told us about the challenges they faced, including the threat of Anglo-Saxon attacks as they fought to regain their land.

One of the most exciting activities was using Viking shields to create a Viking shield wall. We had to work together as a team and think carefully about how to protect ourselves. It was harder than it looked, especially when we had to move together while keeping our shields in position!

We learned that Vikings were not just warriors. They were also farmers, traders, explorers and skilled craftspeople. We had the chance to weave our own bracelets, carefully twisting and crossing different pieces together to create colourful patterns. It was a great way to discover how Vikings used their skills to make useful and beautiful objects. We also looked at some of the materials Vikings used in their everyday lives. Antlers could be used to make items such as buttons, knife handles and needles, while cattle horns could be turned into drinking cups and bowls. Animal skins were also used for blankets, bedding and clothing.

Another activity we really enjoyed was making flatbreads. We learned how Vikings might have made simple bread using basic ingredients. We mixed flour, salt, butter and water before shaping the dough and cooking our flatbreads over the fire. They smelled delicious! We also had a go at threshing corn to separate the grains before grinding them to make flour. We discovered what Viking homes were like too. Their houses were very different from ours, often being made from wood with thatched roofs. Inside, there would have been a central fire used for cooking and keeping everyone warm.

Our Viking adventure ended with a visit to the pigs. We saw the biggest pig on the farm heading out to the pasture, as well as some of the smallest and newest piglets, which were just a day old! The other piglets were only a couple of weeks old. We had to be very quiet as we made our way through the pigs’ home because the mothers were protective of their babies and could become nervous.

Our trip to Tatton Park was a fantastic experience. We learned lots of fascinating facts about Viking life and had great fun trying out some of the activities that Vikings would have done. A huge thank you to the staff at Tatton Park for giving us such an exciting and memorable day!
