What an incredible term it has been for Reception Class! Miss Taylor and Ms. Williams have been so impressed with the determination and enthusiasm the children have shown. From tackling new challenges to taking risks in their learning, they have embraced every opportunity with courage and curiosity.
The term began with the children forming new friendships and settling into their vibrant learning environments. They were among the first to explore the newly enhanced Forest School with Mr. Connolly, and the changing autumnal woods provided the perfect backdrop for their adventures. From foraging to testing different types of shelters, the children investigated which structures were most effective at keeping them warm and dry, showcasing their problem-solving skills and love of the outdoors.
Reception also embraced a new phonics scheme introduced across the department. The children have mastered individual letter sounds and names and are now moving on to digraphs and trigraphs. Their exceptional effort in letter formation, supported by rhymes to guide correct writing, has been inspiring to see. Next term, they will embark on ‘Drawing Club,’ putting their newfound writing skills into action – exciting times ahead!
In Mathematics, the children have excelled in subitising, often outperforming even Miss Taylor! Their focus on recognising numbers quickly is laying strong foundations for mental maths. They’ve also explored shapes such as circles and triangles and created various patterns, including ‘AB,’ ‘ABB,’ and ‘ABC,’ with their creativity and intellect shining through in every activity.
Community spirit and inclusivity have been central themes for the class this term. From baking cakes for the Macmillan Coffee Morning to donating groceries for the Harvest Festival, raising funds for Children in Need, and supporting the Poppy Appeal, the children have shown kindness and generosity. A heartfelt thank you to all parents for supporting these charitable efforts—it has made a significant impact.
October brought some spooky fun to Bridgewater as the children designed creepy pumpkins, created magical potions, and even carved a real pumpkin. This was followed by exploring the concept of community, where they designed their own houses and shared insights about their families. The class celebrated diversity by learning about Diwali, creating vibrant Rangoli patterns, and showing empathy and understanding. On World Mental Health Day, they wore yellow and discussed ways to calm their minds and bodies, demonstrating their growing emotional awareness.
The term concluded with a festive flourish as the children performed courageously in their fantastic Christmas show, Hey Ewe! They captivated a packed audience and then enjoyed their first educational trip to the theatre, where their impeccable behaviour made us all incredibly proud.
Thank you for your unwavering support this term. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to continuing this exciting learning journey together in the new year.
Warm regards,
Miss J. Taylor & Ms K. Williams
