Our final day in Scarborough began rather earlier than expected. After everyone had finally collapsed into bed, exhausted from the previous day’s activities, the peace of the night was shattered by a fire alarm at 1:30am. Groggy and confused, we made our way out—only to discover the culprit was not fire but a spider that had managed to crawl into the sensor. We were all impressed by the centre staff member who sprinted up the 80 steps and the steep slope to reach us, quickly sorting the issue and then apologising for being out of breath after the heroic climb.

Despite the disrupted night, the children were still up bright and early. Bags were packed, rooms were cleaned to an impressive standard, and everything was ready well before breakfast. Another hearty meal set us up for the morning before we tackled one last climb up the hill to the minibuses. It felt rather like yesterday’s struggle of getting everyone in and out of wetsuits—slightly chaotic, a little strenuous—but eventually we managed it, loaded up the buses, and set off.

Our destination was Whitby, where a biting north wind reminded us that the coast can still be very cold. We explored the statue of Captain Cook and the famous whale bone arches, bracing ourselves against the gusts while taking in the views.

But the most eagerly anticipated event of the week was still to come: the visit to the souvenir shop. Mr. Suter did politely ask whether the shop might mind if twenty-nine children brandishing banknotes descended upon them—but he quickly answered his own question with, “I already know the answer to this.” And so, with excitement levels high and pockets ready to be emptied, the final adventure of the trip began. Shopping bags tightly clutched, we eventually walked out of the shop and headed back towards the buses for lunch – the shop staff were closing up behind us with beaming smiles.

Our plan for a picnic lunch on the seafront was quickly curtailed by the biting wind, so we opted for the far warmer option of eating in the buses instead. The journey home began smoothly enough, but our hopes of an on-time dash back to school were scuppered by the closure of the M62 outside Leeds. Eventually, though, we arrived back and the children were dropped off—tired but very happy after a fantastic week.

Throughout the trip, the children showed real resilience in their surfing sessions, tackling the cold water, the waves, and the challenge of getting into (and out of!) wetsuits with great determination. Their smiles and sheer enjoyment during the beach activities have been wonderful to see, and the staff could not be prouder of how they have conducted themselves all week.

Parents may well discover a few soggy items lurking in bags this evening—so good luck with the washing! After such an action-packed week, we are quite certain the children will sleep very well tonight… and we suspect the staff will too.

I really enjoyed this residential as it was near the beach and the beach is one of my favorite places. The night before the fire alarm went of a 1 am twice because a spider touched it. In the moment i was so scared i ran into the door. I also really enjoyed surfing even though it was a bit difficult putting on the wet soots.

It was absolutley stunning. I loved it there so much! I would totally go again if I could but the only part I didn’t enjoy was when a spider crawled into the fire alarm, set it off and woke everyone up! I still don’t know how William slept through it!

I liked this residential because it was super fun to surf and try new things on our surfboard, the most tricky thing was trying to get our wetsuits on. It was so hard! we also got to eat ice cream on the second day after surfing, in the night the most unfortunate thing happend, i spider crawled on the fire alarm twice!

this trip was amazing apart from the spider incidence

I really enjoyed going to Whitby because we got to buy stuff inside a shop. The only bad thing about it is it was extremely windy and when I looked at the sea the waves were massive.

I loved this trip. I really enjoyed how we had surfing for two days and I think the second day was the best one. It was sunny and we even got an ice cream before faced the hard challenge of putting our wetsuits on. The third and final day I think definitely had the worst weather while we were travelling in Whitby. It was so cold!! Overall, I think this trip was amazing. Thank you Mr Rooney and Mr Suter and everyone else who organised it.
