Our Prep III trip to Longley Lane Recycling Centre in Sharston was a brilliant and eye-opening adventure! We discovered what really happens to the items we put in our mixed recycling bins and learned how they are sorted using their different properties. It was fascinating to find out that tin cans are picked out by a giant magnet, while a special laser helps separate opaque and transparent plastic bottles.
We even went inside the busy factory, known as the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility), where we watched all the powerful machines hard at work. It was very noisy, so we wore headsets with an intercom to hear our guide. To stay safe, we also wore helmets, safety glasses and hi-vis vests—just like real workers!
In the classroom, we enjoyed fun games and activities, working together to sort recycling correctly. We also learned about other places we can take items that don’t go in our home bins, like old TVs, broken toys and clothes. It was a fantastic day and we all came away as recycling experts!
