Prep IV had a special visit from a parent on Monday 18th May as part of their learning about future careers. The children also had the exciting opportunity to visit the Senior Department and use the science laboratory.
Dr. Dowdeswell from Arcinova came to speak to the class about his company and the medicines he has helped to create. He explained how scientists work to develop new medicines and how these discoveries can improve people’s lives. It was fascinating to learn about the different stages involved in developing medicines and the teamwork required in scientific research.
The excitement grew when the children were invited to put on their safety goggles in preparation for some practical experiments. One of the activities involved making slime, where Dr. Dowdeswell mixed ingredients together to create a stretchy, gooey material.
The class also watched the spectacular “elephant toothpaste” experiment, which produced an impressive foamy reaction. It was fascinating to see how quickly the foam expanded and to learn about the science behind the reaction. Mr. Hargreaves kindly allowed us to use additional chemicals from the science department, enabling us to create an even bigger version of the experiment.
The visit was both educational and enjoyable, and everyone had a wonderful time learning more about science.
A big thank you to Mr. Hargreaves for allowing us to use his classroom. We are also looking forward to our science session with him in a couple of weeks. Finally, a huge thank you to Dr. Dowdeswell for taking the time to visit us, speak to the class, and demonstrate these exciting experiments.
