There are matchdays, and then there are events. What unfolded on the 3G this afternoon was less a football match and more a philosophical exploration of movement, teamwork, and whether goals are, in fact, a social construct.  Our Prep 1 invitational football tournament was hotly anticipated, as we welcomed teams from James Brindley and Clarenden Cottage on this sunny Spring afternoon.

With two matches being contested at consecutive times, from the very first whistle – superbly shepherded by our Prep VI team of officials – all teams burst into action with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for free cake. Formation-wise, we saw a bold and innovative 7–0–0 system, with all players clustering around the ball like bees around a very slow, slightly confused flower.

With two Bridgewater teams competing, each team played three games in a round robin format.  At this age, while there may have been limited awareness of rules, direction, or indeed the concept of competition itself and awareness of which way each team should be shooting, there was no denying the sheer joy and energy demonstrated by all the players on the pitch.  There were stout tackles, strong challenges, carefully aimed passes, fine saves, and goals aplenty.  Even at this age, there was plenty of skill on show – not least, Ahmed’s ‘Riverdance’ impersonation on the ball that dazzled the James Brindley players and, let it be said, most of the players and onlookers!

Joking aside, well done to all the players who performed admirably in front of the hordes of watching parents.  Thank you to Mr. Connolly for overseeing the organisation of the tournament, and to the Prep VI helpers and teachers from the other schools who ensured everything ran as smoothly as could be.  Watch this space – we may just have been watching some of the football stars of the future!
