Prep VI consolidated our Painting and Mixed Media: Artist Study unit by visiting the Lowry Gallery to look at the works of our local artist LS Lowry.  We were met by visiting artist Michelle Leigh, and our first point of call was the Lowry 360 experience, where we were dropped into Lowry’s crowds attending a Bolton Wanderers football match.  With a bustling market place behind us, and tall smoking chimneys all around, it was a brilliant way to experience first hand Lowry’s work.  Michelle then took us into the gallery itself, where she talked about the different painting styles that Lowry used and how this led to different types of pictures that he painted and drew.

Having seen his work close up, Michelle then took us into our own studio where she gave us tips and tricks as to how we could reproduce some of Lowry’s techniques.  Using one point perspective, stippling, smudging, water washing, rubbers and other techniques, we created our own versions of a Lowry street scene, with a self portrait and one of Lowry’s beloved dogs in the foreground.  We then used a larger canvas where we used these techniques that we’d learned to create a visual landscape that Lowry perhaps would not have seen – this accounts for our multi story car parks and Greggs buildings, amongst others!

Michelle’s session was thoroughly engaging, and it was a shame to bring it to a close, but stomachs were rumbling and we also had a drama session to fit in.  This time it was Sam who led our activities.  Again using Lowry as our inspiration, we undertook a variety of drama activities, including recreating scenes from Lowry’s paintings.  We then chose a character from one of the paintings, and wrote a brief back story for that character – we then split into groups and acted these out.  Sam was an inspiring leader, and the children responded well to the tasks he set us.

An entertaining, engrossing day, helping to bring our Lowry learning to life – thanks to Michelle and Sam for making it so engaging!

I really liked this trip one of my favourite parts was listening to other people’s stories. I also really liked the warming up and acting the matchstick men out with Sam. Another bit I liked was the 360 video but everything was really great.

this trip was so fun and exiting. I really enjoyed it here and learnt a lot about L.S Lowry. I really enjoyed the acting and the story writing in the studio. My favourite painting is the man with the red eyes. Although it’s a bit intimidating it’s very impressive how it used to be a self portrait.

I really enjoyed going to the Lowry theatre I will remember this experience for a long time as I feel it has helped me with my art techniques. Also my favourite activity was the acting section where we wrote and acted out a story based of Lowrys pictures. It was also really cool learning how to draw a street with houses from a single spot of a page.

I loved the trip to the Lowry because I love acting and painting and that is exactly what we did. We got to see L.S Lowry’s actual paintings! My fav part of the trip was the performing arts because we got to play lots of games, imagine what Lowry’s match stick people would walk like and did really funny warm up activities. I also enjoyed the painting section because I learnt lots of new techniques which i will continue to use in the future. The techniques where very helpful because it helped me draw a one point perspective road just from an X. Overall the day was amazing and I would defiantly do it again.

This trip was one of the funnest trips ever, in the morning we got to look at some of lowrys art work, including his most famous one “at the match” and then a person called michael taught us some amazing art techniques. After lunch, we had drama walking around like the matchstick people and writing a story about a charactor from a painting, overall this was the best trip ever i would love to go again

This trip to the Lowry was an amazing experience, from acting to making our own Lowry pieces. I have to say my favourite pieces of art that we saw were the beach landscapes. The landscapes felt so calming and realistic, very emotional. Our class was lucky enough to get to watch a video in a room, where every wall and the floor had a screen and they showed one of Lowry’s paintings come to life, and some were also combined to others. A spectacular trip, would have to be the most interesting and inspiring one I have been on.
