Prep V has enjoyed a bustling and rewarding term, both inside and outside the classroom, embracing the values of inclusivity, intellect, integrity, and inspiration.
The excitement began in September with the much-anticipated residential trip to Anglesey. The children displayed exceptional teamwork, determination, and resilience, rising to each challenge with kindness and camaraderie. Their positive attitude made the experience a memorable start to the school year.
Back at school, the Victorian era came to life in our History lessons. A highlight was our immersive History Day with Mrs. Bannister, where we stepped back in time to explore school and home life in the 19th century. This hands-on approach was enriched by a visit to Styal Mill, where we gained insight into the lives of apprentices in a working cotton mill. Creative classroom activities included sketching Queen Victoria, crafting Victorian peg dolls, and printing designs inspired by the nature-based patterns of William Morris. Our reading of Berlie Doherty’s Street Child provided a compelling narrative that inspired heartfelt letters, newspapers, and diary entries, all showcasing the children’s writing skills.
In Geography, the focus shifted to rivers. A field trip to Worsley Woods with Mr. Grant allowed the children to study Kempnough Brook, observing meanders, erosion, and deposition firsthand. We measured water flow using the ever-popular Pooh sticks and even conducted an archaeological hunt. Classroom activities included independent research on rivers, atlas work, and a wonderfully messy experiment with sand and water, all of which enhanced their geographical knowledge and investigative skills.
An important part of our PSHE learning this term has involved reflecting on relationships – how we can develop cooperative skills and show respect. The children’s generosity and ability to reach out to others beyond our school community was clearly seen during the cake sale for St Anne’s Hospice, on our non-uniform day for Children in Need and in their thoughtful harvest donations for Loaves and Fishes at our Harvest celebrations.
The term concluded with the vibrant and memorable performance of Jonah Man Jazz. Prep V’s enthusiastic singing, dancing, and acting culminated in a show of exceptional talent and teamwork. The fuchsia-pink whale, which gleefully swallowed Jonah, was a crowd favourite and symbolised the creativity and energy that Prep V brought to the stage.
