Carter Sees The Light!

The highlight of our time at the Etihad was definitely Carter’s winning goal in our last game of the tournament v The Ryleys. Carter made the most of the flood lights finally being switched on in the indoor arena by scoring immediately after receiving a fabulous pass from Noah before controlling the ball and finishing with laser like accuracy.

This final victory was a fitting climax to an enjoyable but testing set of matches against Altrincham Prep., Stockport Grammar, St Ambrose College and The Ryleys. The team made progress with each match taking Mr Rooney’s mantra of passing accuracy, movement and communication to new levels each match.

Our first game ended with a 3-0 defeat against a very talented and streetwise Altrincham team. William had worked hard at the centre of defence to repel the waves of attack from the opposition. The BWS team were rather pedestrian in their approach with defenders not tracking the opposition runs and poor accuracy with passing when we did win some possession.

A re-focus on accuracy, movement and communication was the priority for the second game v Stockport. Benjamin suddenly had the bit between his teeth and worked very hard to prevent the tricky Stockport winger from getting through on goal. Stockport were the deserved victors but BWS had vastly improved from the first game with a 2 nil defeat..

The next priority was to give more support to Carter up front so Noah was switched to a midfield role versus St Ambrose. This switch depended on our three defenders working hard with determination to stop the opposition. Asa and Elijah certainly stepped up to the plate for this game with Asa bossing his winger and Elijah looking like a powerful leader in the centre of the pitch. It took a thunderbolt shot to break down the BWS defence. There were positive signs for the team further forward with Noah having a shot knocked around the post in the final minute which would have earned BWS a 1.1 draw.

And so to our final game and victory. Every member of the team excelled. William made some excellent saves and the defence once again played well as a unit. Our captain Victor was magnificent throughout the tournament saving his greatest endeavour for the final game which he controlled cleverly in a sweeper role and making the space for Noah to assist the winning goal.

Unfortunately a hail storm greeted us in the car park after our victory but our good cheer was not dampened and we were back to school in good time for a delicious and much awaited lunch.
