Prep III travelled back in time 2,000 years ago to the Roman era at Grosvenor Museum on Wednesday 7th February.

On arrival, we were met by Titus (a Roman Emperor) who told us what was expected of a Roman child. We held our shields in our left hand and marched out of the museum and through the centre (luckily we didn’t have to walk 20 miles like the Romans did) to the amphitheatre.

After being shown how to create a shield to protect us all, we had a race to see how quick we could get into the formation. A quick time of 1.14 seconds was achieved. Next we formed an arrow shape and had to break through the Celts (Miss Gill, Miss Gregory, Miss Lawrence and Titus). Miss Gill unfortunately didn’t make the end of the battle after the Roman children manage to break our barrier and knock her down! Laughter from the children and Miss Gregory filled the area.

Sin, Sin, Sin, Dec, Sin was shouted as we marched back to the museum. Those are the Latin words for left, left, left, right, and left. Anne and Sam lead the chant very well. We left our shields, our arms were tired, to explore the Newstead Gallery. Did you know there are real human bones on show?

Lunch was needed after our exciting morning.

In the workshop area, we explored what it’s like to be an archaeologist, what a Roman kitchen was like and how they made Roman tiles and roofs. Onto the Stories in Stones room which was filled with grave stones.

The journey home was filled with a everyone playing a massive game of ‘I Spy’, some were easy to guess and others so much harder.  We have all had such a lovely day at Grosvenor Museum. Thank you to Miss Gill for organising.

(And in case you were wondering, our title says, “They came, they saw, they conquered, then they went back to Bridgewater School.”)
