Seven Prep VI children represented Bridgewater this afternoon in Premier Sports’ latest competition, hosted here at Bridgewater School. Bridgewater have a fantastic record in these tournaments, winning the last three that have been hosted here, and several teams this afternoon were keen to derail us from our winning streak.
Having only played one session of handball prior to today, the team initially played well and won their group with wins against Wardley (4-2), North Walkden (5-3) and St. John’s (5-2 – although we had to come back from 0-2 down in this game).
In a tense semi-final, Bridgewater came back from 2-1 down to win 3-2, with practically the last shot of the game. And so to the final against a strong Moorside team who had dominated their group. Going 1-0 down, Bridgewater went ahead 2-1 but were unable to hold on to the lead as Moorside scored three more unanswered goals and ran out worthy 4-2 winners. Their obvious delight at the final whistle showed just how important beating Bridgewater has become!
Well done to our fledgling handball stars – we hope to have more games when we revisit handball in our PE curriculum next term. Well done also to Imran, who won the Player of the Tournament Award, voted by all the teachers and coaches present.
