Prep VI have recently started studying L.S. Lowry in their art lessons – pop into the classroom and you’ll see some fabulous versions of The Man with the Red Eyes – and so it seemed only right to journey to another part of Salford to experience some of the artist’s work.

Our initial workshop was with Isabelle – we learned some basic drawing techniques, before venturing out in the Lowry to sketch objects outside the theatre building – probably somewhat different from the views in Lowry’s day. Visiting the gallery (there was great excitement when we saw the original of The Man with the Red Eyes) we looked at some of the styles of the artist’s work before learning how to draw using his sense of perspective. Taking our tips back to the studio with us, we used our skills to create our own Lowry-style landscapes, using a variety of media.

After lunch, it was Izzie who led our next session, this time drama based on Lowry’s work. We focussed on three of the paintings from the gallery: The Fight, The Funeral Party and Leaving the Factory. Splitting into groups, our tasks were to create quick freeze frame vistas from each of the paintings. Once we had done this, the challenge was to continue the scene from the point it had been stopped during The Fight – the teachers were certainly glad these were ‘make believe’ fisticuffs, although the withering glare of the the passing women in the scene were worthy of dramatic awards!

An entertaining, engaging day, helping to bring our Lowry learning to life – it’ll be interesting to see now how these skills are utilised back in the classroom.

I enjoyed this trip. The acting part was fun as I have not done this before recreating all the scenes.

Going to the Lowry was great, we all had so much fun in the art and drama workshops painting L.S.Lowry style landscapes and trying to life Lowry’s painting through acting. Overall amazing.
