Bridgewater travelled to Wilmslow this week to take on Pownall Hall Prep in football and netball. The netball team lost narrowly 14-13 in an end to end thriller indoors, whilst the footballers had to go outside in the wintery conditions.
Despite the cold and the muddy pitch, Bridgewater started brilliantly and took a deserved 2-0 lead early on in the game.
Captain Archie tapped an in-direct free kick back to Oliver A whose shot was blocked on the line. However, an alert Archie was on hand to blast the ball into the roof of the net. Moments later Archie broke up a Pownall attack and fed the ball down the line to Daniel. A pin point cross from Daniel picked out Oliver B who stroked the ball into the bottom corner. At this stage in the game Bridgewater were well on top and Oliver A hit the bar moments later in what was to be a game changing moment.
Pownall re- grouped and started to pile on the pressure. A goal kick landed directly at the opposition striker’s feet to put Pownall back in the game. An unstoppable free-kick brought the game back level, before a corner was not cleared properly to put the hosts 3-2 up. With the pitch deteriorating and defenders struggling to stay on their feet, Pownall added two more goals from free-kicks before half time.
The half time break gave the team time to clear heads and re-assess tactics. The second half was an absolute battle with both teams having chances to score. Matthew in goal pulled off a string of great saves early on, whilst the hosts keeper produced a fabulous save from an Archie free-kick that was destined for the roof of the net. Ethan C went close late on and Oliver B almost added to the score-line after a mazy run from the half way line.
The final word went to Pownall Hall who scored with the last kick of the game. Full credit must go to the Bridgewater defence who blocked and threw themselves in front of shot after shot. The return game on the astro at Bridgewater will be an interesting game at the end of the month. We also plan on playing the Wilmslow side in rugby and cricket in the near future which will be a big test for the emerging talents of our youngsters. Next up is another ISA challenge match against Greenbank Prep of Cheadle Hulme on Thursday 8th February.
