Just before the Easter break, the latest round of Premier Sports competitions took place at Bridgewater School. With 8 schools scheduled to attend, Bridgewater were fortunate to be able to enter Prep 1 and Prep 2 hockey teams. As it turned out, the commitment to supporting local sporting events was to pay off for the two teams.
Premier Sports were disappointed to be let down by 5 schools and were extremely grateful that Bridgewater and eventual winners were able to participate in the tournament. A round robin format was agreed upon, which guaranteed all teams more playing time. Each team played each twice in the group stage, with the top 2 meeting in the final. The slightly younger Bridgewater B team battled bravely in there games and almost beat Bridgewater A team the first time round! Frankie went close on several occasions but needed more support to secure a goal for the team. Abigail and Adam combined well at the back, whilst Blake and Max provided much energy in the midfield.
In the final itself, Bridgewater A went into the game with renewed hope. They were soundly beaten 4-0 in the first game against Lightoaks Infant School, but managed to produce a scintillating performance to beat them 3-1 in the return fixture. Goals from Tommy Jack , Anton and Alexander gave the team a superb win, with Tommy adding to his tally from previous games.
Despite both teams having opportunities to take the lead in the final, goalkeeper Zak could do little to prevent Lightoaks taking the lead. Ava and Tatiana worked tirelessly at the back, with Sid being a revelation in midfield. Alex, Tommy and Anton all went close to peg the opposition back but in the end a 3-1 result was a fair reflection of the game.
All the players can be proud of how well they did on the night as it was there first experience of a hockey match. To finish as runners up is also a credit to the team for their commitment and enthusiasm overall. Next up for Prep 1 and 2 is a football tournament in June. If we compete with the same determination and energy then it will be another enjoyable and successful for everyone once again.
